Peer Mentoring Services

One Independent Living Center core service is Peer Support.  ABIL provides peer support in two ways: the majority of our direct service staff have disabilities, and we have trained Peer Mentor volunteers who work with individuals to help them achieve their independent living goals.  ABIL Peer Mentor volunteers are exclusively available for ABIL consumers.  Individuals interested in having a Peer Mentor Volunteer must first sign up for ABIL services and be assigned to an ABIL program.  Staff can then assist you in completing a request for a peer mentor volunteer.

Are you interested in having a Peer Mentor Volunteer?

Individuals who request mentors are:

  • 18 years old or older
  • Have all types of disabilities
  • From all lifestyles and various cultures

Mentees agree to:

  • Have at least two contacts per month with the mentor
  • Work on achieving independent living goals with the help of a peer mentor

ABIL Peer Mentors are individuals who:

  • Have a disability, or are close to someone who does
  • Have successfully achieved independent living
  • Are willing to assist others to achieve their own independent living goals

ABIL Peer Mentors:

  • Listen and provide support
  • Take part in solving problems that all people with disabilities have in common
  • Share their knowledge of community resources
